How do you prepare salmon in the oven?

October 13, 2022
2 min read

Salmon can be prepared in many different ways. One of them is in the comfort of your own home in the oven. Here you can find out what to look out for when you want to prepare a delicious salmon fillet or a young salmon in the comfort of your own home.

How do you cook a salmon fillet in the oven?

To cook a fresh salmon fillet in the oven, do not heat it above 150 degrees. For a fan oven, 130 degrees is recommended, and for thicker salmon fillets, a maximum of 150 degrees. If the salmon fillet is cooked at too high a temperature, the whitish protein will ooze out. For best results, preheat the oven to the desired temperature before placing the salmon fillet inside. The fresh salmon fillet needs about 20 minutes in the oven.

If you have a core temperature measuring device, the following applies regarding core temperature and degree of cooking:

  • As with steak, the core temperature of salmon also determines the perfect degree of cooking.
  • 43 °C: almost raw, has a deep orange colour and a texture like fresh sashimi.
  • > 50–54 °C: tender and lightly browned on the outside, with a juicy, slightly glassy texture on the inside.
  • > 60 °C: cooked through from the outside to the inside. This temperature should not be exceeded.

How do you cook young salmon in the oven?

The young salmon weighs between 1500 and 2000 g. Depending on the size, the time in the oven also varies. Here too, the temperature of 150 degrees should not be exceeded, although the salmon skin has a protective function and the protein remains in the fillet. The cooking time is about 50 minutes to an hour.
